Adelaide Connected 9.0: Why Progress Beats Perfection, and Connection is the Engine of Change

By Dan Hadley MBA, BCOMM, CMC, IML, Adelaide Connected Committee Member and President of the Institute of Management Consultants (IMC) SA/NT Chapter

Stepping onto the floor of the Adelaide Convention Centre on November 6, 2025, for the ninth annual Adelaide Connected event, the energy was palpable. A sold-out crowd of 450 leaders, innovators, and professionals had gathered—not just for a networking dinner, but for a collective reaffirmation of what makes the Adelaide business community truly special: our commitment to connection and collective progress.

As a member of the Adelaide Connected Committee and President of the Institute of Management Consultants (IMC) SA/NT Chapter, I have a unique vantage point. I see firsthand the intricate mechanism of collaboration that underpins the state’s professional engine—the relationships forged here translate directly into business progress and collective industry strength.

The success of Adelaide Connected 9.0 was immediate and overwhelming. We achieved the highest attendance in our nine-year history, cementing the event’s reputation as the premier professional networking dinner on the South Australian calendar for the Information Services and Professional Services sectors. The intellectual capital and the sheer density of influential individuals in that ballroom reflected the growth and ambition of the Adelaide economy itself.

As one attendee put it perfectly:

“There’s something truly special about walking into a room buzzing with familiar faces and positive vibes. An evening so heart-warming, inspiring, and full of laughter.”

The Unwavering Power of Industry Coalition

The unique strength of Adelaide Connected lies in its collaborative backbone. This is not the event of a single organization; it is the collective achievement of a powerful coalition of industry associations, all united by a shared vision for South Australia’s future.

My organization, the IMC SA/NT Chapter, is proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our esteemed partners: the PMI Adelaide Chapter, the IASP Australia Chapter, the IIBA Adelaide Branch, the ACS, Change Connect, CMI, DAMA, ITSMF, and AIIA. This collaboration of professional bodies ensures that Adelaide Connected remains both cross-sectoral and cross-disciplinary, guaranteeing that attendees are exposed to the widest possible range of expertise and insight.

The IASP Australia Chapter captured this spirit of collaboration:

“This week the IASP Australia Chapter collaborated with the PMI, IMC, IIBA, ACS, Change Connect, CMI, DAMA, ITSMF, AIIA and other industry associations to host Adelaide Connected 9.0. An outstanding event with some 450 attendees full of networking, current global events and learnings.”

IASP Australia Chapter

This unified approach is essential for a city like Adelaide that is rapidly expanding its footprint in high-tech, defence, and space industries. We recognized years ago that for our professional community to meet the demands of this growth, we could not afford to operate in silos. Adelaide Connected serves as the annual focal point where these critical disciplines meet, share knowledge, and establish the foundational trust necessary for complex business collaboration.

The Keynote: Navigating the Inevitable with Confidence

The intellectual core of Adelaide Connected 9.0 was the exceptional keynote delivered by the highly regarded speaker Marty Wilson CSP, titled “Change without Fear.” In an era defined by continuous technological disruption, evolving regulatory landscapes, and rapid market shifts, this topic could not have been more relevant to our audience of senior leaders and industry strategists.

Marty’s presentation, delivered with brilliant humour and profound philosophical depth, tackled the core tension inherent in every modern organisation: the universal human resistance to change. He argued that the problem is not change itself—which is, fundamentally, the definition of life and progress—but the fear of that change, especially the fear of navigating it alone.

As Bailey Abbott reflected in their post-event commentary:

“We heard from the inspiring Marty Wilson CSP, who challenged us to reflect on the very definition of life itself: ‘The condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death.’ At Bailey Abbott, we believe in embracing that continual change—in technology, in leadership, and in how we connect with our community.”

Bailey Abbott

This message resonated deeply within the professional services community. As consultants, we are often brought in to manage the implementation of transformation, but Marty’s message was a powerful reminder that transformation begins with mindset. It is about building a culture of resilience and providing the necessary professional network—the very network that Adelaide Connected provides—to ensure that fear doesn’t paralyse progress.

One attendee from Change Connect summarised the sentiment beautifully:

“People don’t fear change. They fear changing alone. Adelaide Connected 9.0 brought business and information professionals together to connect, laugh, share, and learn. Our keynote Marty Wilson CSP had us laughing so hard we forgot we were learning. His message—humour isn’t a distraction from change, it’s how we move through it.”

Four Strategic Takeaways for Leaders

The insights from Marty Wilson and the subsequent panel discussion with our Gold Sponsors provided a critical, actionable framework for strategic leaders. Here are the four key lessons that every professional in the room took away:

    1. Language: Progress over Change

We must be meticulous about the language we use in our organisations. The term “change” often carries a negative, imposed connotation, leading to employee fatigue and resistance. We must strategically reframe transformation efforts as “progress.”

Most people are naturally reluctant passengers in a process they view as inconvenient change, but they become willing participants in a journey they recognize as positive progress. This linguistic shift is vital for driving buy-in from the frontline to the executive suite.

As Aplo articulated in their thoughtful reflection:

“Stop saying change—talk about progress. Language matters. Most people are reluctant passengers in change but willing participants in progress.”

    Aplo

    2. Leadership: Executives as Owners, Not Delegators

The panel was unanimous: effective change cannot be delegated solely to “Change Managers.” While these specialists are essential for enabling the process, the ultimate ownership and communication of the “why” must reside with the executive leadership.

“Change Managers don’t do the change—they enable it. The real change leaders must be your executives. They own the purpose and the ‘why.’ If they don’t lead from that place, change gets reduced to delivery mechanics chasing resistance instead of building resilience.”

    Aplo

If executives fail to lead from a place of conviction and purpose, transformation is reduced to a set of mechanical deliverables, and resistance will inevitably overwhelm resilience. The success of any major project in Adelaide’s large organizations—be it defence platforms or digital health systems—hinges on this top-down strategic authenticity.

    3. Execution: Design over Documentation

For the tech and professional services audience, one of the most powerful takeaways was the insistence on moving beyond outdated methodologies. Change requires design, not merely decks (slide presentations).

We must stop rolling out extensive communication plans and training schedules before truly understanding the human impact of the change. Transformation is an act of business design—a redesign of how people, processes, and technology intersect. It requires systems thinking and an understanding of human factors, not just compliance with a rollout timeline.

“Change needs design, not decks. If you’re still rolling out comms plans and training schedules before understanding how the change will feel for people, you’re managing deliverables, not change. Change is a redesign of how work actually happens.”

    Aplo

    4. Culture: Normalise Experimentation

Finally, the message was clear: in a rapidly evolving market, nothing is permanent. We must embed a culture of continuous learning and experimentation. This means creating psychological safety for teams to validate their direction and adapt as market forces—technological advancements, customer needs, and global events—demand.

“Normalise experimentation. Remind your teams that nothing is permanent—only progress. The forces around us—tech, customers, regulation, markets—don’t stand still, and experimentation is how we both validate where we’re heading and adapt as we go.”

    Aplo

This is how the Adelaide community will ensure it remains competitive and agile on the national and global stage.

The Commitment of Our Industry Partners

The success of Adelaide Connected 9.0 would be impossible without the deep and consistent commitment of our Gold Sponsors. The presence of these industry leaders—Fragile to Agile, NRI Australia & New Zealand, Aplo, Bailey Abbott, and Hitachi Vantara—highlights the strategic significance of the event. Their sponsorship is an investment that underpins the quality of the evening, from the venue to the calibre of the speakers.

    NRI Australia & New Zealand

Fragile to Agile, another founding Gold Sponsor, echoed this sentiment:

    Fragile to Agile

During the panel discussion, representatives from these organizations offered open and authentic perspectives on leading their firms through change. Their willingness to share candid insights added immense value, making the concepts discussed by Marty Wilson immediately practical and relatable to the Adelaide context.

    Voices from the Floor

Beyond the stage, the real magic of Adelaide Connected happens in the conversations between sessions—the handshakes, the business cards exchanged, the ideas sparked over dinner. The feedback from attendees painted a vivid picture of the evening’s impact.

“What a great evening! Walking into a ballroom full of clients and industry colleagues—and feeling genuine warmth and fellowship? That’s special. Guest speaker Marty Wilson nailed it with his twin message: bring fun and lightness to the seriousness of work, and treat change as an inherent part of normal life rather than as a disruption.”

    David Kerner, Account Executive, NRI

“Adelaide Connected just keeps levelling up—bigger, better, and bringing even more of our tech community together. Love seeing the energy in this city grow every year. Adelaide’s future is looking real bright.”

    Dena Hadian

“Such fun celebrating South Australia and our vibrant business community at Adelaide Connected last week. Marty Wilson CSP reminded us with his delightful humour that life is short—enjoy the ride and learn from the challenges—as they make us better—embrace change. Life is change.”

    Juliana Button

PMI Adelaide Chapter board member Pasan Pathirana captured the essence of the community spirit:

“More than 450 attendees from so many different industries. So many disciplines. So many brilliant minds connecting for one purpose: a stronger and more connected South Australia. Great attendees bring great energy. Great energy builds great communities. And this community keeps getting stronger every year.”

    Pasan Pathirana, PMI Adelaide

    Giving Back: Supporting TreasureBoxes

The evening demonstrated a powerful commitment to social responsibility—a core value of our professional community. The Adelaide Connected Committee was proud to present a $2,000 cheque to TreasureBoxes, a not-for-profit charity providing essential support to disadvantaged children across South Australia.

This act underscores that the professional success celebrated at the Convention Centre is intrinsically tied to our collective responsibility to uplift the wider South Australian community. As professionals who have benefited from the opportunities this state provides, we recognise the importance of extending that support to those who need it most.

    The Professional Ecosystem in Action

What struck me most throughout the evening was witnessing the professional ecosystem in action. From the team at akto Pty Ltd hosting their clients and partners, to Bastion Technology Services reconnecting with industry friends, to Texture proudly sponsoring and connecting with like-minded professionals—every corner of the room buzzed with meaningful interaction.

“Thank you Adelaide Connected! It was a privilege to be part of a fantastic evening celebrating our vibrant South Australian business community—connecting with customers, partners, colleagues and friends.”

We are committed to building on this foundation, ensuring that this annual gathering remains the essential event for professionals in the Information Services and Professional Services sectors who are serious about building a strong, innovative, and interconnected Adelaide.

As the team at Reframe Change noted:

“The theme being ‘Change without fear’. We know that it’s not possible because of how our human brains work—but there are ways that fear can still happen without it stopping the improvements and change happening.”

    Michelle T Holland, Reframe Change

The future of our city’s economy depends on the strength of our networks, and Adelaide Connected provides the annual space to reaffirm that strength. I look forward to seeing you all at Adelaide Connected 10.0.
